Memories of India !!

People, people, people,
Crowded shops, crowded roads,
Crowded buses and trains.
Cows stuck in traffic,
Dogs wandering around,
Pigs walking in a line, mother, piglet, piglet.
Trucks on the road, signs written on the back,
Cars speeding by, noises everywhere.
Tourists walking on the streets, asking for directions,
Temples are crowded, prayers echoing everywhere.
Women buying saris, bangles and bindies,
Fighting over vegetables.
People arguing, talking, and having fun,
Everything is as it should be.
While I sit here across the ocean,
Remembering and missing
India.

Saving Earth !!

I never thought I would be able to travel to another dimension. I also never thought I would be able to see God. It is 1510. Aliens and Robots rule the world and are planning to take over the Universe….. Humans are in grave danger……

“Number 174, 175, 176, and 177. Leave your belongings in your cabin and walk outside to the stadium,” blared the loudspeaker. Four Humans gone; 173 more left. How long before all of us are gone? I guess six months? Maybe a year? I don’t think earth will last that long without nature.

“Dad! Number 174 was my best friend, Laurie!” Lily ran in the door. “Now I am the only child left on this planet! I am missing Laurie already.” And with that Lily sat at the foot of her bed and started weeping. I stopped musing and sat down next to Lily to comfort her. “What are they going to do to her, Dad? She will die up there? ”, asked Lily.

I pulled back her blonde hair and soothingly whispered, “She will go to heaven and maybe even meet your mother.” It had been three months since my wife-Susan-had died. I knew that Lily missed her a lot and wished that she had never died. I felt the same.
Lily stopped crying and said, “Does Mom still remember us in heaven?” Lily was 16, but she still believed in fantasy. She looked at me and toyed with her Purple Heart shaped amethyst necklace, which her mother had given her the day she had died. The necklace had belonged to her great, great, great grandmother.

“Yes,” I replied, “of course she remembers. You were the apple of her eye. I remember that she loved you more than me!” Lily giggled a little. This was my chance! I started tickling her and she burst into laughter. She always reminded me of Susan when she laughed.

Soon after, Lily had left to visit the secret library that no one except the humans knew about; I sat down at my chair and faced the poster that looked like a window overlooking a beautiful flower filled garden and a setting sun in the distance. Earth didn’t look one bit like that now. Instead of looking like a purple and green marble it looked more like a brown and muddy marble. It was as if Mother Nature had completely lost earth.

We, the humans, had to live in underground cabins--one cabin for each family. A single white tube light plastered in the roof lightened up the whole room. Lily had found some bright posters in the secret library, so she had decorated the dull white walls with them. There were two cots on the top right corner of the cabin, a table and chair on the bottom right corner of the cabin, three chairs and a small TV (brought in from the secret library) on the top left corner of the cabin, and a place to cook and store food on the bottom left corner of the cabin. There was a secret door in one of the kitchen cabinet that led to the secret library.

We had been living here all our lives and it had gotten a little boring, but this was the only home we had. So it was either this or death.

“Dad, look who I found!” Lily said as she climbed out of the secret door. A robot followed her in. The robot was tall and looked exactly like a human, but there was one difference that could be seen easily: it had a short antenna on the head for channeling to the main robot server.
“Why did you bring a robot in here? It’s going to kill us!” I screamed.

“No, Dad! I found him in the secret library. I freaked out at first, but when I listen to him I found out that he is actually against what is happening right now. And guess what? He wants to help us bring nature back to Earth!” Lily said.

I inspected the robot as he looked at me eagerly. “What’s your name?” I demanded.
“Erion, Sir.” He replied with an English accent.
“Why were you in the secret library, and how did you get access to it?” I asked.

“I was wandering through the underground cabins, and I came across a peculiar looking door with a lock on it. So I open it up with my finger and found the book. I was looking at the books then I found your daughter reading, and she brought me here,” Erion finished.

“Hmm… Okay, I believe you,” I finally decided that if he had really been a bad robot, he would have killed Lily on the spot.

“Excuse me, Sir, but I have an idea…if you don’t mind.” Erion said.
“I don’t mind. Call me Nick.” I replied.
“Why not build a time-machine, gather all the humans, go back in time, and live there?” Erion suggested.

I thought about it for a moment and said, “That’s a good idea, but how will we make it?”
“I love to read, so when I saw the library I was in awe.” Now Erion was blushing! “I found an interesting book about how to build a time-machine. I think that you should see it.”
I took the book from Erion and examined it. It looked pretty old and it said ‘Dairy’ on the cover. I look inside and there was lots of writing and a date. “This is not a book but a diary. And it’s from 3004!” I screamed!

“Really?! I didn’t know there was anything from that time! It’s so old! WOW!” Lily also screamed, with an amazed look on her face. Erion just looked at us, smiling.

“Are you sure that we would be able to make a time-machine with this? If we will be able to make one, then how will we get the all the materials for it?” I asked Erion as Lily stared at the diary as if it was going to leap up into the air and start dancing any minute.

Erion put his right hand and close his eyes. A few seconds later he opened his eyes and said, “I just read the diary and I know that we will be able to make this. Leave the materials to me. I will get everything we need to make the time-machine, but we will have to build the time-machine in the library. It will take about one week to finish making it.

“Okay… we can start tomorrow,” I replied.

The next day at about 12 in the morning there was a knock on the secret door. It must be Erion. It could also be Lily because she studies in the library everyday from 10am to 3pm. I opened the door and found Erion standing on the other side.

“Hello, are you ready to start the time machine?” asked Erion.
“Yes I am! And Good morning,” I replied. I walked inside behind Erion and found Lily looking at a pile of metal and glass. Then the fun began!
Lily and I started reading the directions to Erion, and he put together the time machine as fast as lighting!

This continued for the rest of the week until there was only one thing left to finish the time machine.

“Now all you need is an amethyst rock, and you’re done with the time machine” Lily finished.
“An amethyst rock? Where will we get that from?” I asked.
“Easy! Lily, your necklace is made out of an amethyst rock. We could make the port for the rock in a heart shape and put the rock there.” said Erion.

We spent an hour trying to shape the port into just the right shape. Once it was done, Lily took of her necklace and inserted into the port. Suddenly, there was purple light coming from inside the Purple Heart shaped amethyst. Soon Lily, Erion, and I were sitting on the seats. Erion typed in ‘3004’ and “San Francisco, California” on the screen and pressed ‘enter’. Then suddenly the machine started shaking, violently and the next thing I knew there was a purple portal in front of the machine, and we were going right through it to the other side!

“WHOA!” we all screamed at the top of our lungs (except for Erion who didn’t have lungs!).
“Are you sure that we won’t die in this thing?” I screamed to Erion.
“No, Nick, I am sure that this is going to lead us right to our destination,” Erion screamed back to me.

The machine stopped abruptly, and we all jumped out of the machine-relieved to be on land again. Everyone let out a breath of relief-at the same time!
“Wait! This is not 3004! I cannot detect where we are! The surroundings do seem familiar though” said Erion.

“I know where we are! This is where people say God lived. Umm…Ancient Greece! I can’t believe that we are actually here!” squealed Lily (she must be very excited).

“What are we doing here? Aren’t we supposed to be in San Francisco, in 3004? What are we going to do now?” I said with a worried tone in my voice. I was getting really worried now--it is very rare for me to get worried. Erion took out the diary from the compartment under the seats and flipped to the last page of the diary. He started reading it.

“I know why we didn’t go to 3004. It says here that if you use an amethyst that was given to you out of love you may accidentally go to another dimension. I guess I missed the fine print!” said Erion, blushing! (How do robots blush?) “Typical” Lily muttered.

“Can’t we just go back?” asked Lily.

“We cannot. The time machine needs to rest for a while or else it may get lost in the space and time continues,” Erion replied. Hmm… so we can’t go back until tomorrow and we don’t know the first thing about this place… I’m freaking out! I AM COMPLETELY FREAKING OUT!

“What do we do?” I screamed!

“Calm down Nick!” said Erion. “I guess there is nothing left to do but to explore this place and look for help.”

Look for help? Where are going to look for help? The tone of Erion’s voice calmed me down, but I was still worried! Finally I looked at my surroundings. We were in a clear meadow. There were statues of Hellenic gods on the far edges of the meadow. Erion scanned the meadow and started walk toward a gate bordered with flowers.

We walked for a few hours and finally reached a tall gold gate with the sign ‘Mount Olympus’.
“Hey! This is Mount Olympus! Only God can enter, but if you are really in trouble you can close your eyes and think really hard about your troubles, and you can get inside,” Said Lily.

So we did just that, and when we opened our eyes again, we were inside! I look behind me and…WOW! I was on a floating mountain above the clouds! I could see the whole world from here! It was beautiful! It was as if I was in a dream! Now Lily and Erion were looking too. They had amazed looks on their faces, just like me. Finally, we looked away and started walking again.

A few minutes later we reached another gold gate. This time the sign said ‘God’s Palace’. Erion knocked on the gate. Suddenly, a man with winged sandals appeared at the gate.

“A-are you r-really H-Hermes?” Lily stammered.

“Yes, I am, Miss! How can I help you?” said Hermes (the messenger and son of Zeus) cheerfully.

“We were wondering if you could let us see Zeus,” said Erion.

Hermes eyed us carefully, decided we were safe, and said, “All right. I will go ask his highness, Zeus that if you could see Him.” With that He flew off into the huge, beautiful castle.
A few minutes later He returns and opens the gate.

“All right, you can come,” announced Hermes. A few guards came behind Him and escorted us inside the castle. The castle was even bigger on the inside then on the outside! There were golden statues lining the walls and the arched roof, walls, and ground were made of gold, silver, glass and tons of jewels! This place must be Heaven!

We quickly went to the top floor of the castle through a teleporter-!!!!-and came to a gigantic door. It had a sign that read ‘Zeus’. Hermes turned around to face us.

“Okay, this is it. Please be quick, respect His Highness, and talk one person at a time. He is over a billion years old!”

Hermes then opened the door and let us in. There were a few large doors on either side of us and a big wooden desk and velvet chair in the middle. A man as big as the doors was sitting on the chair and peering down at us. He had long curly white hair and a long curly white beard. I felt really tiny!

“Hello there!” said Zeus. “How can I help you?”

“As you can see, we are from Earth,” started Erion.

“Ah…I remember Earth. It was the first Planet that the Gods made. It was based on our world…such a beautiful place… until the Zorbonians and Robots took over it and practically destroyed it. I was going to renew it tomorrow by flooding it,” Said Zeus.

“We have a problem on Earth. It’s a long story.” I said shyly--probably because of his power and respect.

“I love long stories! Tell me all about it,” Zeus replied.

“Okay. So as you know…” I started. I told him about how I had to move to the cabins when I was two, about how Aliens killed Humans as a game, and Lily and I were numbers 173 and 172-next in line to die. I also told him about the time-machine and the accident. Zeus listened to all of this intently. When I was done He thought for a few minutes. Finally He sighed.

“Well…this story needs a happy ending and I am going to help you with it. Earth used to be my favorite planet. Do you still have your amethyst necklace Lily?” asked Zeus.

“Yes,” said Lily as she gave it to Him. Zeus took the necklace, put his finger on it, and closed his eyes.

A minute later he opened them again and said “I have put a little magic and lots of good luck in this. When you raise it to the sun the power will come out and fix Earth, send all the Zorbonians back to their planet, and fix all the robots on Earth to be good,” Zeus said as he gave the necklace back to Lily.

“Thank you, your Highness,” thanked Lily.

Then as Lily, Erion, and I were returning, Zeus said, “Lily, your Mom is a good soul, and she still remembers you and your father,” Lily smiled at Zeus and left feeling happy.
Hermes transported us to our time machine and said goodbye. I put the necklace in its port and we all got transported back to the secret library.

We talked about what had just happened for a while. Then Erion left, and Lily and I went to sleep feeling the best we had in years.

“Numbers 170, 171, 172, and 173. Leave your belongings in your cabin and walk outside to the stadium,” The loudspeaker blared the next day. Okay…it’s time.

“You all know the plan, right?” Erion asked us.

“Right!” Lily and I replied.

We all left the cabin and walked to the stadium. Lily and I took our spots. The stadium was a large circle with a muddy floor. There were white bleachers surrounding the circle. The bleachers were filled with Robots and Aliens.

I spotted Erion right behind me. I gave him and Lily a thumbs up. Four Aliens walked in the stadium and took their spots as the crowd cheered and clapped.

A few minutes later Erion threw a Styrofoam ball at Lily. This was the signal.

Suddenly, Lily took off to the middle of the stadium. Erion and I steered away the guards. The other two Humans followed our lead. Lily quickly took off her necklace and held it up against the sky. As soon as it caught the sunlight, it started glowing purple. Then the necklace shot up into the air and purple flames started erupting from it. There was a bright white light and then everything went black.

The bright sunlight woke me up. I stood up and looked around. The Aliens were nowhere in sight and the Robots were getting up. Lily was helping Erion stand up. Erion a little bent and his antenna was broken. I looked at myself and found out that I had a few bruises too. That’s when I realized that everything was gone. Instead of the usual buildings, factories, polluted sky, and waterless grounds there was nature! Nature was everywhere! It worked! The amethyst worked!

It had been seven years since the impact of the amethyst. ‘Environmental Issues’ was the job that Lily now held. Earth was finally a habitable place. Nature and will had won against evil…there was bright future ahead far all of mankind.
